Some of us have extra time off in December. After the gift giving is done, we spend time with family and friends, go out to eat, shop, and surf the web. If you’re like me, you’re looking for some fun and interesting shark videos and movies to watch. To get you started, take a look at these.
Let’s start with gifts. I wonder if you know any good places to search for gifts for shark lovers. Well, there are plenty, if you want gag gifts. Stay away from the general gifty sites if you are buying something for someone who is serious about sharks. They won’t really appreciate the “A Shark Ate My Homework” t-shirt or a mug with a cross-eyed shark on it. There are many non-fiction books and DVDs about sharks. One site that has a variety of items, silly and serious, is The Discovery Channel Store, in the section devoted to Shark Week.
In videos, Sploid, an offshoot of Gizmodo, has featured a short clip and a full three minute video of a mako shark that is pretty scary. The video camera appears to be attached to the back of a boat, trailing bait. The video was taken in Ocean City, Maryland. Be sure to watch the entire clip. That shark seems to burst out of nowhere!
A kayaker in Hawaii was attacked by a shark in early December. He was dangling his foot over the edge when a shark tore off his foot and despite the efforts of his fellow kayaker, Patrick Briney died. This is the thirteenth shark attack in Hawaii this year. The official story is here:
Real shark attacks are frightening enough, but the video game Grand Theft Auto 5, well known for its violence, has included a Shark Challenge. The game includes the ability to take a water vehicle out into the ocean to check out waters infested with sharks. The user’s character may try to fight the shark or get eaten… depending on their goal.
A new documentary movie, Unfairly Feared?, about great white sharks, seeks to challenge the public fear of the animals. The Sunrise morning show in Australia speaks with the filmmaker.
If you get tired of watching videos, search the web for the top shark movies of all time. It seems everyone has an opinion on the subject, from Parade magazine to Listverse. Will you agree with their choices? I’ve taken a look at a few and I’m not sure that I agree with all of their choices. In my mind, Open Water deserves the number two spot and number one is exactly the movie you expect me to choose: Jaws. For some reason, Jaws is one of those movies that was scary in 1975 and is just as scary today. Catchphrase? “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Good luck in finding the perfect gift for your shark lover (even if it’s yourself!) and then enjoying some time off learning more about your favorite water creature.
